Welcome to Summer Classes.
Life isn't all about fun and play. That's what Katelyn learned after hearing her sister's talk with her aunt. Aunt Claire.
It was as usual a sunny afternoon when her aunt knocked on their door. "Hey Katelyn. How are you?" Aunt Claire asked Katelyn. "I'm fine Aunt Claire." Katelyn replied and smiled. Aunt Claire walked and then asked Rose where Kalley and Kaye were. "They're up stairs madame." she replied at the same time pointed at the stairs.
Aunt Claire climbed the stairs and knocked the wooden door three times. After hearing this, Katelyn followed her aunt. She tip toed her way up the stairs and took a glimpse of what was happening inside the room through the little open space of the door.
She listened to the conversation between her sisters and aunt. "Aunt Claire, good morning. How are you now? Oh. How are Claudette and Charles?" Kalley the oldest asked. "Well. They're doing great. How about you girls?" "We're doing fine Auntie." replied Kaye. "Well, your father called me and said it was important for you girls to talk to me." "Yes auntie. We were asked by dad to talk to you and ask some favor." "Well? What is it?" "It's about Katelyn. Mom and dad wants her to skip Nursery and just go to summerclasses. We don't know how to manage the papers or the things needed so we need your help." Kaye explained to her aunt.
Katelyn didn't listen to the other details. She went downstairs and played with Rose. Then she asked "Rose, what's Summer Classes?" Rose didn't say a word and just smiled at her. Seeing this reaction from Rose, Katelyn sighed.
Aunt Claire went down and bid Katelyn goodbye.
A few weeks passed and Aunt Claire returned. "Hey Katelyn. You're going to Summer Classes tomorrow." Aunt Claire told her enthusiastically.
The next morning, Katelyn woke up at around 5am. The sky was still dark. She took a bath. When she got out of the bathroom, she was freezing. Her body was shaking from the cold, and her hair was so wet that the water was dripping on the floor.
Rose came to her and helped her get dress. She combed her hair and even placed clips. Aunt Claire picked her up at around 5:30 am. They rode a vehicle and they both entered a building. Green painted walls with a dark green roof. The place's gates had banners with words written like "Welcome to Earthview Learnign Center!"
Aunt Claire held Katelyn's right arm and they walked through the place's hallway. They stopped in front of a pink wooden door. Katelyn felt anxious as Aunt Claire continued knocking the door. A lady opened it a little and looked at Katelyn and her aunt with a smile. She gestured them to come in.
Aunt Claire asked Katelyn to sit down and let go of her hand. She then talked to the lady. Katelyn looked around her and saw the other children sitting around her silently. Behaving. She faced her aunt again. A few minutes passed and she was still staring at her aunt, Aunt Claire looked back at her and raised her hand to say goodbye.
She walked out of the room. Katelyn was surprised with what happened. Why would Aunt Claire leave her there? Why would she just say goodbye without explaining? Why did they ask her to wake up so early in the morning just to be brought somewhere, be left and just sit? Everything happened so fast for Katelyn. As a child, she had lots of worries, new to the world. Uncomfortable staying with strangers. What's worse, no one she knew was with her.
She ran to the door. She saw Aunt Claire standing there. Looking at her. She knocked on the wooden door as tears started falling down her cheeks. The lady tried holding her and calming her down but she cried. "I wanna go home." she spoke, so soft it was hard for the people to hear. She was rubbing her eyes with her hands.
She was carried and asked to sit at the table. That's when the lady let her aunt enter the room once more.
"Katelyn. It's okay. Summer classes would be fun. You'll learn and play. I'll just be outside okay? Don't cry anymore. Don't be scared, sweetie." Aunt Claire assured her.
Katelyn continued rubbing her eyes and just nodded at her aunt. Her aunt left the room again and Katelyn went back to her place. Time after time she would look at the door. Her aunt would be looking at her and smile.
Katelyn felt relieved. She listened to whatever the lady was saying and tried socializing with the other kids.
Katelyn has always been so afraid of being alone. Yet again, it was unavoidable. She had always wanted to be somewhere she felt safe. Nowhere else. Her summer has stayed that way. Going in and out of summer classes.
